Those of you diagnosed with ADHD are diagnosed because your parents or someone else initiated you into the system, took you to see doctors, talked to your teachers, put you through tests etc... I'm sure all of us in the younger generations exhibit symptoms of so-called ADHD. You do not have more of a "right" to Aderall than your similarly unfocused, lazy peers. He did say to come back in 2 weeks and if my focus didn’t improve, he would look into a stimulant. Any suggestions on how to attain this??

I had been on klonopin for a long time for anxiety and then I couldn't afford to go see my psychiatrist, so I just dealt with it. My husband and I divorced (I was 26 at the time), and I got my regular MD to give it to me for a bit, due to the worsening symptoms. The second followup I had with him, I wanted to get an extra klonopin/day because I needed it. I explained the problems I was having (I was also in my last semester of college and the stress of dealing with the divorce and taking care of a 4 and a 2 year old with no help from the father was awful). Then, out of the blue, the first thing my MD did was ask, "Has anyone ever suggested that perhaps you have ADHD?" This is a doctor that knows I smoke pot to help my insomnia (I do try and be honest with my doctors) as well, BTW. Suddenly a light when off in my head- I had taken Adderall before to stay awake and do homework, to deal with work after a hangover etc when I was younger (Ritilin a few times in my teens and actual Adderall in my 20's), and it suppresses my appetite. I have an extremely low metabolism and no one knows why, so I have to eat under 800 cals a day in addition to working out three days a week to lose the recommended pound a week. Now, I saw this as my way in! Finally- I would have the energy for the kids, my last semester of college etc- and maybe lose some weight! So, I played the game and walked out with a script of 30mg XRs (not the klonopin I wanted/needed, but you can't win them all, right?). I couldn't believe it- my golden ticket to being super mom (my patience is unwavering on it) and finishing college, plus drop some poundage. I also suffer from severe depression that is not responsive to medications (I have tried over 35, and no, I was not taking any other drugs at the time, including smoking weed b/c I know that can cause them not to work). After 12 years, I am now considering ECT. My depression has gotten to an all-time low. I am remarried (graduated years ago), and now my kids are school-age. I still get my adderall, and thank fucking christ. I don't know if my psychiatrist thinks I actually have ADHD or not (I started getting them fro her instead of my MD), but I think she knows I NEED them. I don't use them to get "high"- getting jittery isn't fun. I take the amount I am prescribed (which is now a 30mg IR in the morning and a 20mg IR in the afternoon, though I often take it fairly close together), and I know if it were not for that, I might not even be able to get out of bed to care for my children for the few hours between the end of school and when my husband gets home. I can clean the house, help with homework, give them love and attention they need, and then I lie back in bed. I am sorry for the novel, but long story short- I probably don't have ADHD at all, and I don't particularly like taking my Adderall in high doses (I did try a few times, but the side effects weren't worth it all, and it didn't really give me euphoria), so I'm not just "looking for a high". My script never runs out early (often I have some leftover) and it allows me to pull myself out of my depression to give my kids the love, focus and attention they deserve, as well as to clean up the house so there burden for my husband. If it were not for my Adderall, I would have the energy to do the bare minimum and fail at that (I know b/c I wouldn't take it for a few days, as I like to give my body breaks, and I would just sink back into my depression), and I am SO thankful that I can be a good mom to my kids and a (fairly) good wife to my husband, though my depression is a cause of much stress. I am getting help, as I already stated, and am researching the possibility of ECT, given that no meds work.
