Libertards / Recovered History / January 18, 2012
By Mark Ames

Browsing through some old copies of the late, great Spy magazine, I found this interview with the former spokesman for the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), Joe Powers, in which he declares himself a Libertarian.

Here’s the article spread, published in the October 1995 issue of Spy:

And here’s a close-up of the historic moment when NAMBLA’s spokesman declared himself as a lover of liberty, so to speak:

Obviously, this can mean only one thing: Spy magazine was a mouthpiece for Obamabots.

The putatively late, great SPY magazine.

“Libertarian” has quickly become shorthand for “creepy weird dude with retarded politics” for me. I wonder if that’s true for the general populace.

It’s almost always a dude calling himself that, too. You rarely meet women who call themselves that & if you do they usually have issues. In my younger, stupider days I dated a couple of “libertarian” women – they were nuts but pretty wild in bed, as crazy chicks usually are. Find yourself a libertarian girl if you want a really wild one night stand, eXile readers. (Assuming you can find one that’s fuckable.)

  • 5. MCSquared  |  January 18th, 2012 at 4:08 pm

I knew it. I knew it. Every libertarian I’ve ever known, if you got them drunk, let slip that it was all about molesting little boys or girls or the tyranny of the incest laws.

  • 6. DK  |  January 18th, 2012 at 4:25 pm

In fact Mary Ruwart, who is a big wheel in Libertarian circles and even tried to get the LP nomination for prez in 08, advocated repealing all age of consent laws, etc…She is also a Scientologist

I miss SPY magazine more than the Bill of Rights.

  • 8. Jesse  |  January 18th, 2012 at 5:23 pm

LOLbertarianism brand synthethic populism brought to you by the Brown Nose Collective and Brawndo.

  • 9. Jesse  |  January 18th, 2012 at 5:36 pm

I used to debate LOLbertarians online but I finally discovered that they are retarded and debating them is a waste of time. The biggest contradiction of LOLbertarianism is that they bitch and moan about The State taking away their Freedom but really it’s only because of the The State that LOLbertards are allowed to live at all. In ever pre-state society, every person in the community is required to perform active service to the common good. Each and every lazy shitbird who refuses said service is promptly ejected from the community, which is a virtual death sentence. Only with the arrival of The State, and it’s property laws, taxes and other official stuff could the IDEA of LOLbertarianism every arise: the totally batshit stupid IDEA that nobody should have to actively contribute to the Common Good by actual service or paying taxes. Within the State, it was at least theoretically possible to conceptualize such a retarded notion. But with the help of some awesome brown nose faux economist/whore/employees of the British East India Company we have a whole bunch of books and shit to help these self-deluded gold-bricking carpers to think they actually have a point.

@jonnym: “It’s almost always a dude calling himself [libertarian], too.”

    More specifically, white dude.

  • 11. John Drinkwater  |  January 18th, 2012 at 6:31 pm

Never mind the fact that libertarian means left-wing radical in the rest of the world…leave it to the Americans to corrupt the term.

  • 12. Pascual Gorostieta  |  January 18th, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Anyone else find the picture of Batman and Robin in the magazine fucking hilarious?

  • 13. franc black  |  January 18th, 2012 at 8:12 pm

Nicely stated, my friend, nicely stated. Can I use this passage? I’ll credit “Jesse an Exile forum participant”.

So true about “libertarian” women, head cases, but great sex. Don’t ever let them know where you live…

    Proof-

Makes sense. “Libertarian” commonly means “my views are retarded but should still be accepted because it makes my worthless animal existence feel special.” That’s why you find so many on the internet.

  • 20. Cum  |  January 19th, 2012 at 5:29 pm

“Well I guess I’m a libertarian, I don’t know, I’m not really into politics.” Some people that identify as libertarian are those people that are just aware enough to catch on that the two major parties are corrupt, but don’t really have a developed awareness of political alternatives. Their interest in politics only goes so deep as deciding on elecion day to punch in the third box on the ballot if a third option is even listed. Many times, in local races the only third party candidate listed (if there even is one) will be libertarian. They end up voting libertarian, and then assume that because they voted for a libertarian they mist be a libertarian too. People have a tendency to keep their own behaviors and beliefs in sync with each other; this profession of libertarianism is a case of a person demonstrating that they have molded their own ideology to better match their observed behaviors (rather than the other way around).

Then there are self identified libertarians who believe intellectually that they are superior to others, so they vote libertarian so that their behavior reflects their beliefs.

Which is worse? The second kind, because they are less likely to be swayed from libertarianism – because they have a sociopathic personality profile The first kind of libertarian voter might have compassion and so they are easier to push toward progressivism.

  • 21. NoPast  |  January 19th, 2012 at 6:56 pm

Libertarianism is pretty much a classic example of a passive revolutionary philosophy. It uses revolutionary language and rhetoric to present itself as a true alternative to the current system, whilst in actuality being nothing of the sort. It appeals to those who feel disenfranchised by the current system, and then subverts and pacifies them.

AEC’s pre-troll comment: Look what we have here, folks! A real live baggertarian troll masquerading as a serious eXiled reader who wants us to focus on the issues! Your kind doesn’t come around this site much these days, so I’ve decided to let your pathetic bottom trolling pass by unimproved just this once…to let you get a feeling of how it was back in the good ol’ days before the AEC came to troll town and shut down the party.

What’s your point? ad hominem attacks and generalizations are fun, and part of the reason I like Exiled, but I prefer when they’re the salt to actual content. I would’ve enjoyed this if it was cleverly snuck into an article, but trying to dig up dirt on people without saying anything meaningful is getting kind of old.

  • 23. gavinmcinneswhitepower  |  January 20th, 2012 at 7:13 am

I agree. It’s better to for me gavin mcinnes to be obsessed with mark ames. also, i have this fantasy that ames will never get on tv again. seriously, i really think i did it. I did it !!!

  • 24. misery  |  January 20th, 2012 at 12:36 pm

Hi, another Misery fan here trolling your site. just wanted to say “hi” and stuff

  • 25. CAW  |  January 20th, 2012 at 4:46 pm

Kathy Bates from Misery here again. Just spend way too much time trying to read Ames in such a way as to DESTROY HIM MWAHAHAHAHA. I think I’m the first one to stumble on all the things Ames wrote–I mean yeah sure he wrote that stuff himself so it’s not like I’m discovering something, but still, I discovered it. And if I can get people to assume it’s all totally earnest and humorless, my evil genius plan just might succeed.
    damn you Ames, daaaaaaaamnnnn youuuuuuu!!!

  • 26. one-eyed jesus muffin  |  January 21st, 2012 at 2:23 am

Jesus slept with peely-skinned lepers, day later he blasted leper-strength diarrhea onto the wanting tongues of Roman Libertarians.

It’s straight-up straight out of the Orthodox Jerjuvian Bible, doubting motherfockers.

And how about Timmy Tebow’s buxom buttocks? The backsides of Timmy’s Spandex NFL pantaloons are always a little wet after those God inspired fourth quarter off-tackle TD QB-sneakers, yep, and that because they’re leper-slickened and Christ Jesus-eey foamy.

    Bone Tebow, taste Jesus.

  • 27. Fake Name  |  January 21st, 2012 at 2:40 pm

The AEC is too good. You should let a few troll comments through just for fun.

  • 28. Cum  |  January 21st, 2012 at 5:47 pm

@22: I love the troll-baiting on this site. They troll the trolls and even though you know better you still take the bait. Thats the best kind of trolling.

I’ve lived in areas that are something like 96% white and 96% Republican/Libertarian, their mouths are essentially sewn onto the gov’t teat and they’re all on Food Stamps, Welfare, SS, every friggin’ handout they can get.

Yes, Yavapai County, Arizona, I’m looking at you.

Also notable is, hardly anyone knows shit about the local wildlife, plants, etc. None of these people do anything to produce their own food. There are native plants there that are amazingly productive, and for such a seemingly barren area, there’s an amazing amount of wildlife and an amazing amount of food can be grown. But none of those fuckers care, they get their food from Sam’s Club.

    Tl;DR – Republitarians == feedlot turkeys.

  • 32. Some Guy  |  January 22nd, 2012 at 10:56 pm

Far more pedos have called themselves catholics. What’s your fucking point, Ames?

  • 33. iSockpuppet  |  January 23rd, 2012 at 8:42 am

    @ #4 jonnym-

Yeah, but you don’t have issues, thank God.

  • 34. captain america  |  January 24th, 2012 at 7:05 am

@14: anne coulter is a libertarian now? i guess libertarian is becoming the new fascist, i.e. “person with whom i strongly disagree.”

i met a libertarian girl at a russian-language club in denver a while back. she lived in moscow for years, married and divorced a russian guy. very attractive, to the point that i got a bit tongue-tied until we got to talking about guns and tax avoidance. for what it’s worth, her russian wasn’t very good.

also for what it’s worth, she she worshipped the exile and only wished to one day meet the editors. you are quite clever and your stuff is almost always a good read.

  • 35. Marcus McSpartacus  |  February 1st, 2012 at 5:32 pm

I don’t deny that I’m in NAMBLA; but I resent the insinuation that I’m Megan McArdle.

  • 36. Scott J. Sassano  |  October 2nd, 2014 at 4:47 pm

This is pure pain. I wish I could say this site has no credibility, but the fact is Vanity Fair ranked these guys as among the last true journalists in the business. This article is very relevant to Libertarians, and it hurts.
