Great interview. “Just goes to show what a mean, stupid country this is.”
I think you’ve really got a great point about Jared being driven to this because of his inability to get a job. I read his I-net chats about that as well. That should be obvious. But, the problem is, NOBODY else is saying that. No one in the media will admit it. WTF? Getting kicked out of a community college – for being too weird – probably didn’t help either.
Instead we get all this nonsense about a lack of “civility” in political rhetoric. What a self-righteous moron Keith Olbermann was last Saturday night with that pompous dumbass broadcast. Even Taibbi – Matt Fucking Taibbi! – gave in to the “civility” crap.

Awesome. I have to listen to Doug Henwood sped up by at least 50% to keep from going ADD, but I do enjoy his pod casts.

Write about Russia, Mark. I heard it’s all gopniks and everything is really bad now that there’s actual permanent unemployment like in the rest of the world. Or I guess find someone there who can write a good article about it.

During the interview, your discussion of the ‘school‘ experience – elitist, competitive, alienating; reminded me of Jeff Schmidt’s Disciplined Minds.
The book seems to be a narrative link connecting college and work.

And if we really want to resist government, we need ‘suppressors’, or silencers, on our firearms, so their muzzle pressure wave doesn’t injure our eardrums. But of course to get a ‘suppressor’ you have to pay a $200 Tax to ATF and file a bunch of paperwork and wait months for ‘approval’.
The Government is terrified of US !
The Government is the Terrorists.

I thought of the oddest – and I think most true – theory on why Loughner did what he did. First, it does require that he was not really …. sane. We’re talking some really nonlinear thought processes here. But it should also have the Richard Dawkins seal of approval so allow me to sally forth here.
We males are, from DNA’s standpoint, mechanisms for passing on DNA. Far and wide, if possible. Our basic reason for being is to, as Beavis and Butt-Head put it, get laid. All the other stuff, being a Good Father, etc is all frills. Icing on the cake. DNA wants us to get laid. Profusely. OK so you take a guy like Loughner who’s so weird he’s getting kicked out of junior college algebra classes, who’s so strange he can’t get women to even look at him, they’re so creeped out, he’s convinced he’ll never-ever get laid. I mean, like NEVER, man. What would you do if you were his DNA? First you’d hate your life, but mainly, you’d FIND a way to get laid. And an eternal rule of our culture is, if you become Someone, you get laid. Good, bad, evil, nutzo, doesn’t matter, become Someone, and you’re gonna get laid. Serial killers have women – strange women to be sure but women all the same – chasing after them, wanting to marry them. Political killers, with Presidential assassins at the top of the heap, are even sexier.
And that’s my theory. He did it to become Someone. And get laid.

Great Interview but what’s that teenie little revolver that Ames is holding. Looks like a 38 pea shooter to me. Surely Mark would be happier with a 357 long barrel or at least um, a… glock 19?
