DEVIL BOY

Divorced mother and sometime-junkie Svetlana knew something that everyone else didn’t. Like countless heroines in horror films, she didn’t tell anyone her secret. They would have just looked at her as though she was nuts. But she knew she wasn’t crazy. She knew there really was a devil inside her 4-year-old son Vanya.

Svetlana also knew better than to let the evil spirit grow any larger than it already had. Then God only knows what would happen. The only problem was when to extract the spirit. According to Moskovsky Komsomolets, the kid lived with her ex-husband most of the time. When Vanya came over to visit his mother his babushka usually kept an eye over things. After all, Svetlana had been fighting a smack addiction for several years and wasn’t trusted alone with her child.

But one day two weeks ago nobody else could take care of little Vanya. Svetlana had been on good behavior recently and her mother decided she could watch over Vanya for the day.

Finally, Svetlana got her opening. At first, she tried a relatively benign form of exorcism. She brought the boy to the neighborhood church and willed the evil spirit away. But the poltergeist was a stubborn one and all the holiness of the church was powerless against it. And the priest didn’t want to help out.

Much as it pained her, Svetlana knew what she needed to do. She brought her preschooler into the kitchen and went at him with a knife, stabbing him almost 30 times. But, as any veteran exorcist knows, the death of a body will not kill the spirit that possesses it. So she took the corpse, wrapped it in newspaper, and stuffed it in a large athletic bag. Then she left for the residence of Alexei, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus.

Unfortunately, one of the Patriarch’s guards stopped her before the pilgrimage was complete. She is now sitting in a loony bin, ranting that they never got rid of the evil spirit. It is apparently still roaming around Moscow.

So, if Svetlana ever breaks out, keep your eyes peeled for a sequel.

It’s not clear exactly why Vladimir Komarov was waiting in his Mercedes 220 outside Moscow’s Hospital #60 around 1:30 in the afternoon. Maybe he had just dropped someone off at the clinic. More likely, he was expecting to meet someone to discuss business.

For whatever reason, his killers knew where to find him. While he was sitting patiently in his expensive—but not bulletproof—car, two hit men approached the car and shot a pistol with a silencer through the closed window. All seven shots hit Komarov, who died before help could arrive.

According to several witnesses’ statements to Moskovsky Komsomolets, the killers then jumped into a white shestorka and sped away. The car was ditched a couple of blocks from the shooting. Meanwhile, the militsia arrived at the crime scene and had some troubles getting to Komarov’s corpse. All the doors were locked. After deliberating for a bit, the cops decided to smash the car’s window. After all, the bullet holes had already ruined it.

Komarov had been the director of the shopping center Aleksandrovsky Sad and was also connected to the private security agency Slavyan. No suspects have been detained.

HANGING AROUND

Hamsters can be deadly, and not just from clawing the delicate tissue around various Hollywood stars’ sphincters. Just look at how a furry rodent caused the death of its tormentor, 8-year-old Timur.

The kid was home alone, abusing his little furry friend. His mother was at work at an FSB hospital. His father, an invalid, lay ailing in another hospital. And his older brother was visiting the father.

Timur had taken the hamster out onto the balcony of his third-floor apartment. But this time he got a little carried away playing his favorite game (Spanish Inquisition) and the hamster somehow fell off the edge. Timur was horrified that he lost his playmate.
I wonder if heêll call tomorrow!
I wonder if he’ll call tomorrow!

However, before running down to find the rat, Timur called his mother at work and received permission to leave the apartment. This would be the last time they ever spoke. On his way out the door, he put the string with his keys around his neck. Unfortunately, the hamster hadn’t waited for the boy and Timur returned to the apartment empty-handed and brokenhearted.

Once he was inside, he turned to lock the door. At this point, according to Moskovsky Komsomolets, he made the ill-advised decision to leave the keys around his neck. The lock was slightly higher than his neck and, as he was locking the door, Timur apparently slipped and hanged himself.

About 20 minutes later, his brother returned home. He buzzed a couple of times, but nobody opened the door. His key didn’t work either. The enterprising lad went out onto the street and climbed up to his balcony. Once inside, he went to hang up his coat and saw his little brother dangling from the lock.

The hamster has still not been located for questioning in connection with Timur’s death.

CARING IS SHARING

Olga wasn’t the most stable woman in Moscow. Her history of mental illness went all the way back to 1986, when she checked herself in to a psych ward after her 4-year-old was killed by a car. Doctors considered her crazy enough to qualify for state assistance.

But she seemed to get her act together after giving birth to her next child Valery. In fact, Moskovsky Komsomolets wrote that she seemed like a perfect example of competent single parenting. Olga maintained a decent relationship with her former husband, who spent lots of time with his son despite the divorce. He also helped Olga with money. He even had a set of keys to her apartment.

On April 6th, he arrived as planned to take Valery home for the night. He rang the bell but nobody answered. He let himself in, figuring they slipped out to the store for a moment. As soon as he entered the apartment, though, he realized something strange was afoot. The whole place reeked of rotting flesh.

The smell came from the bedroom, where he found his ex-wife and 6-year-old son covered in mold and dangling from the wardrobe. Subsequent medical analysis showed that first Olga strangled her son and hung him up and then hanged herself.

Apparently, she didn’t think that such a sick child should have to live with a single parent and believed that her Valery deserved better. That Valery was a perfectly healthy child didn’t figure into her logic. She had been dealing with some pretty serious delusions at the time of the deaths. But at least she had the foresight to save Valery the pain of having to grow up without a mother.
