During L&M’s annual party last year, Krazy Kevin almost got beaten up twice—once for not having any cigarettes and once for smoking. Who the fuck is Alice? Find out when Chris Norman brings his English soccer-thug haircut into the political heart of Russia. This guy has only had two hit songs ever and nobody can remember what the second was. Unlike most people who received Hero of the Soviet Union medals in the 70’s, Chris is still alive. His crimes against humanity include being called Europe’s premier country music act and having a father named Pip.

Techno Festival. Friday, April 20. Gorod.

Back in those heady days immediately following the collapse of the Soviet Union, a hip, young German DJ from Berlin’s Love Parade came to Moscow, spinning records with 145 beats a minute. Techno burst through the Iron Curtain. All the communist kids were wowed—it seemed like the old authoritarian regime would crumble before the new democratic ideals and individualism. They saw the future and the future was them. Now, 40-year-old DJ Marusha—that same DJ who opened Russian ears to progressive music so many years ago—is headlining for Gorod’s upcoming techno party. No doubt those very same tracks from ‘91 have been unshelved and dusted off for Marusha’s Russia reunion. Only the music is no longer the harbinger of untold freedom and wealth. It is a symbol of Russia’s banana republic status and the currently emerging police state. Now they don’t allow new or progressive music. Instead, they parade around washed up acts with as much potential as a used condom to prove how different Russia is from the Soviet Union. Only Russians could be fooled into thinking that this shit is still hip. They deserve the “colony of the Fourth Reich” status they’ve worked for over the last 10 years.

If you took all Moscow’s clubs within the Garden Ring and combined them, you still wouldn’t have 7,000 square meters. But Samolet does. That’s right; it will be the first four-floor club full of restaurants, Baskin Robbins, bowling, giant hamster wheels, and more to open in the heart of Moscow. They claim to have more bowling lanes than Kosmos, more mojo than Mike Tyson, and more sluts than Dirty Dancing! Could it possibly be true? Find out at Presninsky Val 14/1. If nothing else, it should have that mysterious Champion-esque appeal that makes us take a trip to Voikovs very once in a while.

Shevchuk, the perennial favorite of Russophile American college students, is going to be rasping about osen’ again. Just when you thought that Russians were losing that special something, Shevchuk steps up and reminds you that the mysterious Russian soul is alive and well. This time he is giving an acoustic concert without back up, bard-style. This show should also appeal to all those who were moved by the recent Eric Clapton show. Don’t be self-conscious about wearing your tightest pair of jeans—it will just help you blend in with the crowd of nostalgic butt munchers.

Drinking Contest. Monday-Wednesday, April 30-May 2. Schwein. 22:00.

Each day has a different theme. Monday it’s beer, Tuesday wine, and Wednesday vodka. Who knows what it is they’re celebrating but it probably has something to do with the workers of the world uniting. Rumor has it that this festival will be cheaper than drinking samogon in your kitchen. There’ll be live music from no-name bands every night and free zakuski on the vodka night. Yippee!
