The Miracle Samovar

Pilgrims from all over Russia have been travelling to a village in the Tver oblast for a glimpse at a phenomenon scientists are calling “absolutely unexplainable.”

A giant bronze samovar residents of the village of Krivonogovo have nicknamed “Vasya” was discovered last year to have the power of speech. According to locals, it can hold up to six conversations at once using its six tea-spouts.

The samovar has already become famous in the region for its wise advice. Some of its more memorable utterances include such dictates as “Our products are better” and “This building may not be all that nice, but at least it’s in an ecologically clean region.”

“Vasya” also brews a mean cup of tea. When you pour yourself a cup, he often says, “Try it sweeter!”

Scientists and philologists who’ve examined the samovar have no explanation for the phenomenon.

“It has the vocabulary of a 37 year-old Russian male of average education,” says Polina Zabarova of Moscow’s Pushkin Institute. “It says it studied German in high school but, apart from a few words, it doesn’t know any.”
