Like you, I thought it was much better than I expected but it was the usual very American take on the war and I don’t get why they even bothered making the Basterds Jewish seeing as that didn’t really have any bearing on the plot whatsoever. But it was more about the myths of the war (and war movies) than the reality.
Check out Paul Verhoven’s (Dutch) Black Book film from a few years ago for an equally lurid but more interesting and realistic take on living in an occupied country at that time.
