Use oil, don't use oil (good luck) that's not the issue. The issue is that these guys clear billions every quarter yet don't want to pay to prevent disasters, nor do they have a plan to fix disasters when they occur.

They will claim new regulation will lead to higher gas prices, but they have the money to absorb the costs. Besides most of the oil comes from overseas where the regulation wouldn't hold sway.

I actually JOINED the Teabag Movement ..for about 15 minutes. Thats' how long it took me to realize that I was suddenly surrounded by mostly semi-illiterate, corncob-munching white conservative christian yahoos -some wearing costumes- who were about as organized & coherent as Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman.

Ever wondered what the yellow flags with John Galt written over it? Sarah may have thought her party has the backing of "Philosophers"!

Does she realize that her party is being infiltrated by Bolsheviks?

Yeah, while it took many years for Bolsheviks to infiltrate both Democratic and Republican parties, it didn't take even one day for infiltrating Tea Party.

I wanted to vote for Tea Party. But I won't considering the way how that party has totally succumbed to young Boilsheviks who infiltrated it under the guise of Capitalists.

Jesus christ, people. Get the most BASIC facts about oil refinery down before you start saying sprouting crap.

Plastic is a BIproduct of oil refinery which is the reason it's the cheapest material on the planet. Saying plastic is a waste of fuel is like saying cornstalk husks are a waste of food.

@11: "...take all the money we save and put it directly into science education spending so that we can raise the next generation of scientists that might be able to science us a way out of this horrifying thing we have collectively done."

Quick question, will this "science" involve either nuking something or prolong an erection? Because if it can't do either, it won't get funding.

tl;dr, humanity is fucked. Enjoy it while you can.

Plastic is a petroleum product and this article is about BP. The hypocrisy is outstanding. First Americans pretend that this "disaster" is something extraordinary, when in reality things like this happen every month in Africa. Then Americans want cheap oil for transport, agriculture and plastic while at the same time complaining about the downside.

I saw on the news this asshole fisherman with a plastic boat running on petrol complaining about not be able to fish because of the oil spill.

Wow. I'm not even going to say that Auntie Hosebag has zero understanding of the refinery process, because to say that plastic is the cause of so much energy waste demonstrates a NEGATIVE amount of understanding.

Auntie Hosebag: You are quite correct. It is also the large quantities of oil immediately available that drives us to consume faster. Had we stayed at using electric motors it would have taken longer time to build up things like train tracks.

Instead we have absurd amounts of oil available right away and no one is really innocent. Even douche bag vegans use plastic and food made using petrol driven harvesters.

Petrol driven harvesters and general use of oil in the production of food is also a major problem.

Allow me to diverge just a touch.

It has become conventional "knowledge" that all that oil the world uses is employed primarily in transportation--folks diatribe endlessly on the price of gas, MPG numbers, hybrids, alternate fuels, deedle deedle dee...

I'm not saying this particular self-flagellation is miniscule or unimportant. I would, however, invite y'all to take a look in your refrigerator(s) before you blame it all on the internal combustion engine. Definitely the #1 culprit in our ongoing destruction of our only home, but not singular.

So, like I said, go open your refrigerator. Now count the number of plastic items in there, mostly packaging. If you've ever spent the two hours it takes to retrieve that new Barbie doll from its plastic tomb, you are familiar with how ubiquitous, yes, over-used, plastic packaging is in this world.

Plastic--every single piece of it--is a petroleum product. Now, you might be able to make a case that using oil for transportation is necessary, ignoring for a moment that a century ago over 90% of the vehicles in this country were electric. But how do you make a case for the glut of plastic packaging that encircles the globe?

I'm all for consigning megalithic monsters like BP and Exxon to the trashbin of history, preferably tomorrow morning. But I think a much easier and just as legitimate target is plastic. Most of it manufactured in the world today is completely unnecessary.

People like to say you have to start somewhere. Well, why not here?

There's nothing like getting kicked in the balls by Nemesis herself. All those slopehead moron teabaggers can now sit on the shore and watch their coastlines being fouled from the
offshore wells they supported while their jobs and futures go bye bye. Never have so many so richly deserved the tragedy they helped bring about.

Well, omerta on the subject of offshore drilling didn't stop Sarah Palin from opening her big yob to blame "environmentalists" for the disaster. If only they'd let us drill in Alaska, etc. Considering that most of the major environmental groups are on the take from the oil industry, this is a fantastically stupid statement (even for her), and a definite sign that we are going to be spared nothing before the end.

By the way, the abiotic (abiogenic) oil conspiracy nuts are coming out of the woodwork over this:

http://www.financialsense.com/editorials/engdahl/2010/0610.html

You see, the fact that the BP hole is futterwacking so vigorously is a sign that there is a never-ending supply of oil in our Earth, only those pesky greens and libs, yadda, yadda. This might be a good subject for the Exiled, given the majority of these nuts are Russian (the dean of the movement being one Vladimir Kutcherov).

"Ideologically, it’s painfully obvious why the Teabaggers are now the Teagaggers: their free-market gospel got mugged by oil-drenched reality"

In reality America is not a "true" free market. If it really was a free market, alternative energy IMO would have come to fruition years ago. The government "subsidizes" the oil industry by providing cheap leases and tax breaks. That means that the government controls or manipulates the market. I think it would be a far stretch to say that the oil market is running as a "free" market.

I'm new to comments so let's make this brief:
A cessation of offshore drilling in the United States necessarily forces us to export our ecological catastrophes to countries less equipped to deal with them (Nigeria for example). I'm not trying to say that we are dealing with this disaster magnificently by any means. Far from it. But oil comes from somewhere. Without it, we would starve.

I’m not trying to say that we are dealing with this disaster magnificently by any means. Far from it. But oil comes from somewhere. Without it, we would starve.

People are such hypocrites, demanding cheap oil and then complain when the real price of the low low prices become apparent.

It was BP's fault but everyone else is also partially responsible. Even if you don't drive at all you buy groceries that have expended oil to be made and transported.

As long as people demand cheap oil things like this will happen. Imagine if all the other oil companies said "we need to raise prices by 10% so we can use that money to thoroughly inspect all our pipelines". If that happened people would start to ramble about it being unfair and unnecessary.

What we need to do is stop spending money on wars, start taxing exorbitantly (a.k.a. pass on the true cost to) anybody who wants to drive a vehicle (with the exception of rescue vehicles/firetrucks/delivery trucks/etc. ... no more driving your SUV to the Starbucks!), and then take all the money we save and put it directly into science education spending so that we can raise the next generation of scientists that might be able to science us a way out of this horrifying thing we have collectively done.
