Gary has a point about the fishing ‘exploitation’. IN 2006 , the Us navy captured a somalia pirate ships and during the interrogations, the pirates said they were part of a somali militia group out of haradere protecting the natural resources off their coast from foreign(to them) fishermen.

If Thai coasts have less shrimp, they simply venture out further and further away, eventually brushing up against Africa.

maybe that was the point. We get all this canned feel-good media and the truth gets buried. Didn’t it seem odd that the story quickly died and we didn’t hear about it any more? Its because of “oh shit that story was wrong, but it was a good story so we can’t retract it…”

remember when the Iranian speedboats “buzzed, attacked, made vaguely threathening motions, dropping mines, etc” againt the US fleet?

then the video comes out and its a bunch of guys wailing around in a speedboat that looks like their lunch cooler flew off the boat. and they never made ANY hostile moves…

ever hear a retraction no that one? didn’t think so…

so any time a pirate boat comes around all navies should run away because the crew might be innocent fishermen ? man these guys can actually invade a few countries (well not india apparently) without opposition as long as they use innocent thai fishing boats. in fact why not disband USN and hire a few thai boats with crew ? that should scare away any enemy navy.

Oh Garyyyy, while on the subject of subcontinental squids, lets look at those brave little mom-and-apple-pie squids on the USS Vincennes, state-of-the-art Aegis Class cruiser with supposedly the most advanced radar system around – couldn’t tell the difference between an Airliner and an F-14!

by the way, i read your article on the f-18 vs V-22, and was wondering about your remark “what we really need keeps getting slammed”. I know of your love of the warthog attack jet and the F-16, but what other pieces of kit aren’t getting their due, and which other weapon systems are as over-rated as the F-18? I can’t believe the Navy turned down Congress’ offer to let them have a navalised F-15.

with a decline of fishing stock, the Thai fisherman are probably suffering as well, so perhaps they turned to the time honored economic crutch of “global outsourcing”, which in this case, manifested itself as: “Will mothership 4 food (or loot)”
