Electrician Shoots Wife, Wife's Friend, Boss, Self
People are working harder and harder all the time to get into this column. Last week one Muscovite earned the ultimate Death Porn acclaim-he forced us to create a new icon in his honor. Valery Pirogov, a 52 year-old electrician, went beserk this past Saturday when he became convinced that his ever-loving wife was sleeping around with everything male in the Orekhovo-Zuyevsky region. Pirogov apparently started to lose his mind about two months ago, after his mother died, causing him to spend less time at home and more and more time riding around his neighborhood on his old Soviet-made bicycle. On Saturday, his wife went across the street to her girlfriend's house, where the friend's family was preparing for the funeral of a relative. During these solemn preparations the electrician became convinced that his beloved was planning nothing less than an adulterous conspiracy and rushed over to the house of mourning with a shotgun.

He announced his arrival by blasting the young friend, killing her instantly, and shooting his wife, critically injuring her. He then raced off on his getaway bicycle and creaked his way across town to the home of his boss, the director of the textile factory The boss was dispatched with one shot to the chest then hopped on his one-speed and raced away, this time heading for the house of his brother, whom he also suspected of sleeping with his wife. Police in motor vehicles, however, apprehended the killer-cyclist, who quickly shot himself to avoid punishment. Still alive on the ground when the police reached him, his last words, according to Moskovsky Komsomolets, were "Finish me off!" The police didn't bother and let him die in the ambulance minutes later.
A Bad Case of the Munchies
It sure pays to stay off that goshdarned marijuana. How's this for a neat little drug-cannibalism story: in the tiny Kazakh village of Daldabai, a young man, an ex-con, was arrested last week on murder charges after narcs raided his place of business. It turns out that the ex-con had gotten a job as a guard at an underground hemp farm after being released from a Kazakh penitentiary. Work there was pretty satisfying for a while, but the pay wasn't so good. According to the Kazakh MVD, the suspect "ran out of food products" about a month ago and "solved his problem nicely" by shooting a friend, which "left him with food for about a week."

He might have gotten away with his little gastronomical indiscretion had it not been for the fact that he forgot that he worked in a drug factory: when narcs raided the scene at the end of November, they found evidence to arrest three people on marijuana trafficking charges, as well as...a pile of human bones. They threw in a murder charge for the guard and hauled the whole lot away. Note to manufacturers of American potato chips and frozen pizzas: there's a market waiting for you in rural Kazakhstan.

Russians call the city of Rostov-Na-Donu "Papa," and whatver the old reason for that was, the new reason is that it is the capital of serial crime. No less than five serial killers have been captured in Rostov since "Red Ripper" Andrei Chikatilo was captured in 1990, and now we have a new contestant: a serial rapist known as the "Lifter." According to police, Aleksei Sidorenko raped 40 schoolgirls in the course of two years, using the favored Russian method of trapping them in the elevator-hence the clever nickname. Unlike a similar rapist who was captured in Moscow a few years ago, Sidorenko didn't kill any of his victims-intentionally, anyway. One girl he raped ran screaming off the roof of a ten-storey building as soon as the elevator door opened. Police were able to repair the lift but the girl died. Sidorenko got the death sentence last week and will in all likelihood after the execution of sentence, be taking the elevator down.
