www.sltrib.com -- An Italian court's decision to hold Google criminally responsible for content posted on its system could have sweeping implications worldwide for Internet freedom. It suggests that Google was not simply a tool for its users, as it contends, but effectively no different from any other media company, such as newspapers or television, that provides content and could be regulated. Google representatives vowed to appeal, saying if the verdict is allowed to stand, "the Web as we know it will cease to exist."
