www.presidency.ucsb.edu -- Message on the Observance of Afghanistan Day March 21, 1983: Today, March 21st, is New Years Day in much of the Moslem world. New years, of course, should be an occasion for celebration. But for the Moslem people of Afghanistan, whose country was attacked and is occupied by the Soviet Army, it is a bitter reminder of a national calamity that befell their nation more than 3 years ago. To focus the world's attention on this crime against an innocent and brave nation, we observe today the second annual Afghanistan Day. To watch the courageous Afghan freedom fighters battle modern arsenals with simple hand-held weapons is an inspiration to those who love freedom. Their courage teaches us a great lesson—that there are things in this world worth defending. To the Afghan people, I say on behalf of all Americans that we admire your heroism, your devotion to freedom, and your relentless struggle against your oppressors.

Reminds me of Rambo 3, in which our hero fights with the plucky Mujahideen against those godless commies; the film ends with the on screen quote “This film is dedicated to the gallant people of Afghanistan.”

One thing that always stuck me about Mid Eastern guerrilla fighting:

Everyone telling me about the American Revolutionary War when I was a kid growing up and how dumb the British were for marching out in the open while heroic Minute Men picked them off from the woods, would turn out to be the same people calling IED attacks against our troops “cowardly”.

I don’t think they’ll ever see the irony.

Notice how not one war apologist will be able to tell you the difference between the Afghan population then and today. They were and are the exact same people.

By the way everyone, China just passed Japan as the world’s largest economy and is on track to become numero uno by 2020. Enjoy your peasant corpses while China kicks your roundeye ass.

Maybe Putin can issue the same quote now?

If Putin were to re-issue that quote, I’d put a poster of him up in my den, and invite him over for barbecue.
